The City council of Huntington Beach voted against a proposal allowing the police department to post mug shots on Facebook of people arrested for DUI. The purpose of this law was to shame drunk drivers, in an attempt to prevent future drunk driving. One council member suggested posting the names and faces of repeat drunk driving offenders on Facebook. However, he originally wanted to post photos of everyone charged with drunk driving in California.
The police opposed the plan, because they believed it would alienate area residents. Many of the Council members voted against the proposal because it would damage the city's image and embarrass innocent family members. More importantly, the Constitutional presumption of innocence until proven guilty, should be considered.
Huntington Beach draws a large crowd to it's night life. It is no surprise then, that it has the highest alcohol related traffic deaths among cities of similar size in the state.
